HPYD6 - The DesigN SESSIONS 

The Volvo Ocean race Auckland was in Auckland in March 2018.

On Sunday March 11th 2018, the HPYD committee organised a range of exciting, publicly accessible presentations and keynote addresses delivered by some of the top designers and engineers involved in the America’s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race. We heard from the following speakers.

1.00pm – 3.00pm: SESSION 1

Burns Fallow (North Sails NZ) – “Wing Design – from zero to (almost) hero.”

Mark Battley (University of Auckland) – “Boats vs waves – how can we make sure the boats win?”

Stefano Nava (Doyle Sails) – “A reality check of sail simulation using RANS CFD”

Brett Bakewell White (Bakewell White Yacht Design)– “A new lease of life for old raceboats.”

Jarrad Wallace (Southern Spars) – “TP52 Rig Design”

3.00pm – 3.30pm: AFTERNOON TEA

3.30pm – 5.30pm:  SESSION 2

Michael Eaglen (McMullen & Wing) – “The McMullen & Wing story – where can the America’s Cup take us all?”

Mark Turner (Core Builders Composites) – “Use of digital manufacturing techniques in the construction of composite racing yachts”

Thomas Basset (Gurit) – “From Race Boat to Superyacht's and beyond - how composite engineering allows designers to push the limits”

Bobby Kleinshmit (Emirates Team New Zealand) - “AC50 foil development”

Guillaume Verdier (Guillaume Verdier Yacht Design) – “IMOCA and Volvo design”

5.30pm – 6.30pm: NETWORKING AND REFRESHMENTS

6.15pm:  DOORS OPEN FOR PUBLIC SESSION

6.30pm – 8.00pm: PUBLIC SESSION

Nick Bice, Neil Cox (Volvo Ocean Race) – “How has the one-design VO65 fleet performed and what are the plans for the future.”


Planning for HPYD7 has already begun. It will coincide with the America’s Cup in Auckland in 2021, and will return to a more traditional format with a full complement of papers and speakers.
